Usually, some people are allergic to peanuts, milk, fish, soy, wheat, and so on. But far in Easley, South Carolina lies a girl that is allergic to life! Yes, life as in the existence of a human or an animal! Brynn Duncan was a regular kid, who went to school, that did extra curricular activities such as karate. She was a peppy and fun girl. But somewhere before her 16th birthday, she got her first allergic reaction. After that, her life has been nothing but a blur of doctor appointments and pain. (Paragraph 10-13). "Its like I'm living in a 24/7 allergic reaction," Brynn explains. After weeks and weeks of research, Dr. Lawrence Afrin, has diagnosed her with mast blood cell disease. Brynn and her parents waited more than 8 months to meet with him. Mast cells are responsible for signaling your immune system when something is wrong. (Paragraph 16). For example, whenever you get a bug bite or an allergic reaction your mast cells release histamine as a warning to your immune system that there is a problem. There are many different kinds of mast cell diseases. The one that Brynn has is called mast cell activation syndrome. Her sickness doesn't grow in numbers, it just acts abnormal. Like other teenagers, Brynn sometimes gets jealous of her classmates. She dreams of eating stuffed crust pizza without having to worry about her sickness. "Early in her taekwondo career, Brynn's instructor told her that she could win a match before it even began -- just by staring down the opponent. She plans to fight mass cell disease the same way." (Paragraph 40). Brynn is a wonderful girl that thinks positive during tough times. People like me will always look up to her.
